Star Trek and Stealing Like An Artist
It can be a tough pill to swallow, but I'm beginning to accept the fact that my work is not completely original but rather the result of theft. It's the unavoidable effect of influences, which we as creatives combine in unique ways. @austinkleone wrote a great book, 'Steal Like An Artist', describing this fact (I'd highly recommend it). New arrangements of influences, filtered through ourselves, is what makes our art and writing ours.
Old Star Trek episodes, a reverence for nature, and 30 years of teaching art have formed my personal aesthetic; the shape of my artwork and world view. The Star Trek influence deserves its own blog post. More on that later......
Curious: What are some big influences that drive your creative output? Any as weird as old Star Trek episodes?
